Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

General Questions

Locate My Will is a simple way to record that you have a will and where it's kept—so the right people can find that information when it matters. You decide who can search, who can be notified, and when searching becomes available (using a search activation date).

Create an account, set your login, and complete the paid subscription to unlock core features (subscriptions are capped at 5 years and can be renewed). Then add your will location details, choose up to three (3) authorized searchers and up to three (3) notification recipients, and set your search activation date.

The search activation date is the "not before" date you choose. Until that date arrives, searches are turned off—and no notifications can be triggered.

Only the people you personally designate as authorized searchers can initiate a search (up to three (3) total). Everyone else is blocked.

Yes. Before anyone you've designated can search, they must verify their identity. This may include providing identification or other authentication materials (for example, an unexpired state-issued driver's license or other government-issued ID).

A search can be initiated only after (1) your search activation date has passed and (2) the authorized searcher has completed identity verification.

Only the recipients you choose will receive notifications (up to three (3) total). The person who initiates a search does not automatically receive notification details unless you also list them as a recipient.

No. The identity of the person who initiates a search is hidden from notification recipients (unless you choose to share that information outside of the service).

Privacy is built into the design: searches stay off until your activation date, only your designated searchers can search, identity verification is required, and notification details are limited to the recipients you select. You can change your permissions and settings at any time.

No. Locate My Will does not store or host wills or estate planning documents, and you cannot upload your will to the platform.

Notifications are intended to share the will location details you provided (and any other information you've chosen to include within the service) with the recipients you designate—nothing is shared with anyone else.

Notifications are sent to each designated recipient by email or by phone as an SMS/text message, using the recipient contact information you've provided. To help ensure successful delivery, keep recipient email addresses and mobile phone numbers up to date.

No. Locate My Will is currently available only within the United States.

Choose a date that aligns with your intent for when searching should be allowed. Many users set an activation date far in the future and update it periodically—what's most important is selecting a date you're comfortable with and keeping it current.

Only designated, verified searchers can run a search after your activation date. Anyone else is blocked from search access and will not receive your will location information.
